We all know that just having a good looking website is important for your customers - but search engines don't just rank your website on how it looks..make sure your website is working hard for you behind the scenes!

9 things Google likes..and we'll check:

1) Responsive website - Does your website work on mobiles/tablets?

2) Speed - how fast is your website to load on different devices? Nearly half of web users expect a site to load in 2 seconds or less, and they tend to abandon a site that isn’t loaded within 3 seconds

3) H Tags - H Tags are text tags which you add to a page and let the search engines know what is important on this page. This is set in the back end of the website and can't be seen with the naked eye. H tags are important for Google to priorities information used on your website.

4) Meta Descriptions/ Title Tags - Meta descriptions are individual to each page. This tells Google what is on this page - Not only that - it's what the customers sees when they search for you in Google!

5) Site Maps - Do you know if you have a sitemap? - This is a blue print of your website. Using sitemaps has many benefits, not only easier navigation and better visibility by search engines. Sitemaps offer the opportunity to inform search engines immediately about any changes on your site. Of course, you cannot expect that search engines will rush right away to index your changed pages but certainly the changes will be indexed faster, compared to when you don't have a sitemap!

6) Alt Tags - The term “alt tag” is a commonly used abbreviation of what’s actually an alt attribute on an img tag. Every time you have an image in your text, the alt tag should describe what’s on the image. Screen readers for the blind and visually impaired will read out this text and thus make your image accessible. This strengthens the message to the browser 'spiders' You don't have to have 'alt' tags for all images, but you do will probably need them for most!

7) Image optimization - This technically should go under 'speed' but I think it was important enough to have it's own section. When you upload an image onto a website and it resizes on screen the chances of that image actually shrinking in file size is slim to none - so what happens is that image is still as large to the web browser as the original image which can have an impact on your website loading time.

8) Broken links - This is a common one and usually results in a 404 error - it happens when you've deleted, or renamed a page and missed a hyperlink. Its an easy fix and one which makes it easier for the 'spiders' to crawl your website.

9) Old Code - This is quite common these days if your website was built using some of the old HTML coding and not HTML5 then this can have an impact on SEO. Its always worth checking as a lot of the time it might just be a quick tweek to bring the coding up to date and could help your organic search.
